Titian referred to the mythological paintings with which he illustrated Ovid’s Metamorphoses as “poesie”. While it is also inspired by Ovid’s poem, Spranger’s Diana invokes not verses, but stories: beautiful, enchanted stories in which Nymphs and Satyrs wander happily, unclothed. But when echoes of the discovery of new worlds reach as far as Arcadia, the narrative changes.
